Privacy Policy

The short version: Just Start stores your data locally on your device. We don't have user accounts, we don't track you, and we don't sell your data. The only network calls the app makes are ones you explicitly enable.
1. Who We Are
Just Start ("the App") is a focus and productivity application designed for people with ADHD. This privacy policy explains how we handle your information.
2. Data We Collect
2a. Data Stored Locally on Your Device
The following data is stored exclusively on your device using local storage (SharedPreferences). We never transmit this data to our servers because we don't have servers.
- Focus session history — start times, durations, completion status, and XP earned for your focus sessions (last 500 sessions retained)
- User statistics — total focus minutes, streak count, level, achievements, and gamification progress
- App preferences — timer defaults, sound selections, theme preference, visual style, and notification settings
- Routine data — custom morning/evening routines you create
- Challenge data — focus challenge progress and results
2b. Data You Optionally Provide
- Anthropic API key — if you choose to use AI features (task breakdown, body double, insights) with your own API key, the key is stored locally on your device. It is sent directly to Anthropic's API servers when you use AI features. We never see or store your API key on any server.
- Task descriptions — when you use the AI task breakdown feature, the text you enter is sent to Anthropic's API to generate micro-steps. This text is not stored by us.
3. Third-Party Services
Just Start integrates with the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy:
- Anthropic API (anthropic.com/privacy) — processes AI task breakdowns and body double check-ins. Only used when you enable AI features and provide an API key or have a Pro subscription.
- RevenueCat (revenuecat.com/privacy) — manages Pro subscriptions and in-app purchases. RevenueCat receives a pseudonymous app user ID and purchase transaction data from the App Store or Google Play. We do not share your name or email with RevenueCat.
- Apple/Google Calendar — if you enable calendar integration, the app reads and writes calendar events using on-device APIs. Calendar data is not transmitted to any third party.
- Apple Music / Spotify — if you enable music integration, the app communicates directly with these services using their official SDKs. We do not access your music library data.
4. Data We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect your name, email address, or any personal identifiers
- We do not use analytics SDKs or tracking pixels
- We do not collect device identifiers for advertising
- We do not use fingerprinting or cross-app tracking
- We do not sell, rent, or share any data with third parties for marketing purposes
5. Permissions
The app may request the following device permissions:
- Notifications — for timer completion alerts, mid-session check-ins, and Rescue Me nudges
- Usage Access (Android) — for Rescue Me mode to detect when you switch to distracting apps during a session. This data is processed entirely on-device and never transmitted.
- Screen Time (iOS) — same purpose as Usage Access on Android
- Calendar — to sync focus blocks with your device calendar, if you enable this feature
- Background execution — to keep your timer running and play ambient sounds when the app is in the background
6. Children's Privacy
Just Start is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided information through the app, please contact us.
7. Data Retention and Deletion
All your data lives on your device. To delete it:
- Delete all data: Uninstall the app, or go to your device Settings → Apps → Just Start → Clear Data
- Delete specific data: Use the in-app Settings to reset your statistics, clear session history, or remove your API key
Since we don't store your data on any server, there is nothing for us to delete on our end.
8. GDPR (European Users)
If you are in the European Economic Area:
- Legal basis: We process data based on your consent (you choose to use the app) and legitimate interest (making the app work)
- Your rights: You have the right to access, correct, delete, and port your data. Since all data is stored locally on your device, you have full control already
- Data transfers: If you use AI features, your task descriptions are sent to Anthropic's servers in the United States
9. CCPA (California Users)
We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Since we don't collect personal information on any server, there is no data to request access to or deletion of beyond what's on your device.
10. Security
Your data is stored in your device's local storage, protected by your device's own security measures (passcode, biometrics, encryption). API keys are stored in local storage and transmitted over HTTPS when making API calls.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new privacy policy in the app and updating the "Last updated" date above.
